About | CoverCalc
CoverCalc is a free calculator that estimates how much life insurance you might need, from your income, debts, an education reserve and what you already have. Every calculation runs locally in your browser — nothing you type is uploaded or stored.
We do not sell insurance. CoverCalc does not quote rates, does not compare carriers and does not refer you to any company. It only produces a number for you to discuss with a licensed agent or financial advisor.
Why the site exists
Most families have never run the numbers on how much coverage they would need. The question sounds complicated, but the math is simple addition and subtraction once the pieces are named. This site names the pieces and does the arithmetic.
How the estimate works
The calculator follows the DIME method: Debt, Income, Mortgage and Education. Multiply your income by a multiple tied to your remaining working years, add debts and education costs, then subtract assets and existing policies. The result is the gap you still need to fill.
Data sources
State median income and mortgage figures come from the U.S. Census Bureau 2023 American Community Survey. The full Social Security retirement age of 67 is published by the Social Security Administration. Both are cited on the pages that use them.
Who made this
CoverCalc is an independent project. The pages are reviewed for accuracy against public data, and each page carries a review line naming the reviewer. We read every email sent through the Contact page.
